The Bloomington/Monroe County Convention and Visitors Bureau is the official source of travel information about Bloomington and Monroe County, Indiana and the "voice" of the local hospitality industry. We work to bring conventions, meetings, sporting events, tourists and their leisure-time dollars to the community. We plan with community leaders for long-range changes and developments to make our area even more attractive to visitors and residents and we are the primary liaison between prospective visitors and the local businesses that will serve them when they arrive.
The hospitality industry is the third largest industry in Monroe County, bringing over three million visitors to the area each year. Tourism accounts for nearly four thousand jobs in the Bloomington area and $279 million dollars each year in economic impact to the community.
Visitors to the Bloomington area are generally well-educated professionals. 38% are first-time visitors to the area, while nearly 61% are repeat visitors. Many of our visitors have a connection to Indiana University as alumni or parents of future alumni.
An average travel party is five people, who stay for an average of 2.5 days and spend an average of $70 per person per day. 79% of visitors spend at least one night in the area. The most popular activities that visitors participate in during their stay are shopping and dining.
