Notes from an IU Alum

July 03, 2008

Summer is half over . . . . .

It's hard to believe it is already July 4th and the year is half over.  The rain has left many in south central Indiana trying to rebuild their lives and my thoughts go out to everyone that has been devastated by the flood waters.  Bloomington was hit hard and fast, but survived relatively unscathed.

As summer continues to fly by things are heating up with Jazz in July.  Free concerts are held every Friday night outside on the Sculpture Terrace at the IU Art Museum.  Another option for outdoor concerts is the Summer Concert Band.  Conducted by either Stephen W. Pratt  or David C. Woodley these are held on the lawn at the Muscial Arts Center.  Dates this summer are July 9th, 16th and 23rd.  Admission is free and the music starts at 7 p.m.

The College of Arts and Sciences is taking two of its arts programs to the streets of the IU Campus on a wrapped Campus Buses.  In IU's ongoing campaign to bring art to the public, and vice versa,  IU Campus Buses are one by one, being wrapped in bright colors with eye-catching graphics.  "The College is planning more and more campaigns like this one, to highlight the many opportunities that students, staff and the public at large have to take advantage of the cultural offerings at IU," said Bennett I. Bertenthal, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Local graphic designer Tosh Swingley created the new design.

And finally, a positive announcement from IU Athletics. The Big Ten Network and Comcast have finally reached an agreement to increase the broadcast coverage of IU Sports.  This has taken quite a bit of time and will hopefully benefit the department as a whole.

As the football team prepares for the August 30 home opener against Western Kentucky and the men's basketball  program rebuilds, I am keeping my fingers crossed. . . . . . . .
