On the evening of Tuesday, June 5, there will be a once-in-a-lifetime event as the planet Venus crosses in front of the Sun. Paynetown SRA will host a live viewing of the transit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Members of the Indiana University Astronomy Club and the Stonebelt Stargazers will be on site to help visitors view the transit through a telescope outfitted with a solar filter. “You must have a solar filter to view the transit,” stressed Jill Vance, Interpretive Naturalist for Monroe Lake. “If you look directly at the Sun with your naked eyes, you risk permanent eye damage.” The Activity Center at Paynetown SRA will offer additional activities earlier in the day. Kids can drop in to make a Sun or Venus-themed craft from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Short videos about the transit will be playing from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. “Venus will not pass in front of the Sun again until the year 2117,” added Vance. “You won’t want to miss this.”
