Home of the Hoosiers.

Founded in 1820, just two years after Bloomington and Monroe County, Indiana University is at the foundation of this community. The beloved, renowned Cream & Crimson school brings in over 40,000 students each year, nearly doubling the city population. The students provide an endless supply of energy and vitality to the community, with new ideas and fresh dreams. That youthfulness overflows into the downtown area, where students mingle with residents at the various restaurants and nightlife venues. The diversity of interests, ages, and nationalities positively impacts all aspects of the community, from the international restaurants to our annual festivals.

The city and the university thrive off of one another — take Kirkwood Avenue, for example. The iconic Sample Gates stand as a gateway between IU and Bloomington, serving as an entrance to our most popular promenade, filled with legendary IU-themed venues like Nick's English Hut, locally-owned restaurants & shops, public art, and more. The avenue is always teeming with life, both students and "townies" intermingling, together creating that sense of euphoric magic inspired by Old IU.

The beauty of IU's campus is just as magical, often cited as one of the most beautiful in the country. The dense woods on campus mimic the nature preserves surrounding the city. Its limestone buildings and the stone outcroppings provide a connection to the local history and industry. The art and artifacts found inside education buildings & museums provide inspiration and knowledge to students & visitors alike.

No matter your reason for visiting campus, you'll be sure to find an abundance of inspiration on the breathtaking Indiana University grounds.
