Located in nearby Brown County, Yellowwood State Forest was created in 1940 when federal land was leased to the State of Indiana. The land was eventually deeded to the state in 1956.

Yellowwood Lake, completed in 1939, is a 133-acre lake with an average depth of 30 feet that offers excellent fishing with a valid Indiana fishing license. A boat launch is located at the south end of the lake; boat motors are limited to electric trolling motors only. Rowboat rentals are available seasonally. Bear Lake and Crooked Creek Lake are also popular recreation and fishing areas on the forest property.

Primitive campsites and two playgrounds are centrally located near Yellowwood Lake. Picnic areas are available for daily use. Camping is not permitted at Bear Lake or Crooked Creek Lake, and swimming is not permitted at any lake in the forest.

Many trails are available for hiking:

  • High King Trail (0.5 miles)
  • Jackson Creek Interpretive Trail (1.5 miles)
  • Resource Management Interpretive Trail (1.5 miles)
  • Scarce O' Fat Trail (4 miles)
  • Lake Trail (4.5 miles)
  • Tecumseh Trail (42 miles; connects the Yellowwood property with Morgan-Monroe State Forest)

Marked horseback riding trails are also available.
