Sample Gates

  • Indiana Avenue and Kirkwood Avenue
  • Bloomington, IN 47408

Sample Gates, located at the Kirkwood and Indiana Avenue intersection, serves as an entryway for students, visitors, and locals into Indiana University's 1,860-acre campus.

Edson Sample funded construction of the gates in 1987 and dedicated them to his parents, Louise Waite Sample and Kimsey Ownbey Sample, Sr. The gates, constructed of Indiana limestone, stand as two welcoming pillars at the edge of Old Crescent, the historic site of IU's first campus buildings built between 1884 and 1908.
