Caramel-Soaked French Toast
2 cups firmly packed brown sugar * 1 cup butter or margarine * 1/2 cup light corn syrup * 10 (1 3/4 inch thick) slices Challah bread * 4 eggs, beaten * 2 1/2 cups milk or half and half * 1 tablespoon vanilla extract * 1/4 teaspoon salt * 3 tablespoons sugar * 1 1/2 taspoons ground cinnamon * 1/4 cup butter or margarin, melted
Combine first three ingredients in a medium saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for five minutes or until bubbly.
Pour syrup evenly into a lightly greased 13x9x2 inch baking dish. Arrange bread slices over syrup. Combine eggs, milk, vanilla and salt. Stir well and pour over bread.
Cover and chill at least 8 hours. Combine three tablespoons sugar and cinnamon. Sprinke evenly over soaked bread. Drizzle 1/4 cup melted butter over bread. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until golden and bubbly. Serve immediately.
For an added twist:
Caramel Apple French Toast - Add a layer of sliced Granny Smith apples between the caramel and Challah bread.
Bananas Foster French Toast - Add a layer of sliced bananas between the caramel and Challah bread.
