Trip Idea: Culinary Arts

There's no doubt that Bloomington is a food town. There are over 90 restaurants in the downtown area alone, most of them unique and locally owned. Add to that the two wineries and two breweries and you've got yourself an amazing culinary destination. Don't be afraid to go exploring off the beaten path, but here are a few recommendations to get you started.

Wineries

There are two wineries in Bloomington, both offering great wine without any pretentiousness. Oliver Winery is the largest and oldest winery in Indiana, with a wide variety of wines (including the Creekbend label, made from grapes from their own vineyard) and a magnificent tasting room. Butler Winery is a little smaller, but just as lovely with a friendly and helpful staff and a tasting room located right in the vineyard.

Breweries

You can get outstanding beer at the Bloomington Brewing Company and the Upland Brewing Company, but the food at the brewpubs is equally as good. An all-around intoxicating experience is available at each brewery and restaurant, and you can find some of these local brews at other bars and restaurants around town. If one of their beers is on the menu, get it!

Restaurants

There are so many great restaurants to choose from, you really can't go wrong. But here are a few suggestions to get you started. Don't limit yourself though, get out there explore the numerous local options!

Finch's Brasserie - The smell of the pizzettas cooking in the wood oven are enough to make your mouth water. But this isn't a pizza joint- this is Finch's Brasserie, a casual restaurant with upscale food. They offer fresh, local food, seasonal menu selections and daily specials.

Village Deli - This is the ultimate breakfast spot in Bloomington. The pancakes are humongous (seriously, the size of your head), and the burrito is pretty massive, too. They're not just large, they're delicious, too! The menu features all the classics and their award-winning Paxton's Potatoes, so it'll suit any taste. they also serve a tasty deli style lunch and dinner menu.

Esan Thai - There's a wide variety of ethnic cuisine in Bloomington, including a few Thai places. Esan Thai is one of those local favorites, with a variety of fried rice, curry and noodle items. You can also choose the level of heat you preferr, from mild to hot, but beware - the hot is very hot!

Trojan Horse - This Greek restaurant has been a Bloomington favorite for many years, and it's easy to see why. The food is fresh and delicious, with a good mix of traditional Greek items and some American staples like burgers and fries. Get the classic baklava for dessert or give it a twist and go for the baklava ice cream - it is amazing!

Sleep Tight

These restaurants aren't the only place serving up delicious food. You can get a fantastic meal at one of these beautiful bed and breakfasts as well. Grant Street Inn, Showers Inn and Wampler House prepare gourmet meals each morning for their pampered guests.
