Bloomington Celtic Culture Weekend

Second Annual Event Celebrates Irish Culture

Bloomington, Ind. – Enthusiasts of Irish language and tradition will once again meet in Bloomington to celebrate and learn about Celtic culture. The event will take place April 16-18 at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) and other Bloomington locations.

Irish (Gaelic) language learners and expert instructors from around the Midwest will gather for a weekend of language immersion, classes, activities and workshops. Event coordinator, Devin Blankenship, says “It is exciting to have experts in Irish language and Celtic topics gather in Bloomington to enjoy our unique surroundings and contribute to our multicultural atmosphere.” Instructors will be coming from UW-Madison; UW-Milwaukee; Notre Dame; Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago; and Melbourne, Australia.

Celtic themed academic presentations and workshops will be given all day on Friday 4/16 and in the afternoon on Saturday 4/18 at the IMU. A limited number of presentation passes will be available at the door for $20 for both days, $10 for Saturday only. The IU-Irish Lion Hurling (field sport) Club will give an exhibition in Dunn Meadow on 4/16 from 4-8pm and play a match at the IU Recreation Field at Fess & 45/46 Bypass on Sunday 4/18 at 3pm, both are free of charge.

According to Julie Warren, Director of Sales and Services at the Bloomington Convention & Visitors Bureau, the event will have a positive economic impact and has good potential for growth. “This is the second Celtic Culture Weekend, and each year it brings new visitors to the area. We’ve provided a marketing grant to help promote it outside of the area because we think the event provides a unique experience that you can’t get in many other Midwest cities.”
