Categories: press releases

Bloomington, IN - This holiday season is a great time to plan a visit to Bloomington, when the city will be filled with festive celebrations, unique shopping and holiday cheer. Major events include Canopy of Lights, The Nutcracker ballet and a theater production of Willy Wonka.

The shopping season starts off on the second weekend of November, when three local guilds will hold their annual holiday shows. The shows take place on Friday the 8th and Saturday the 9th and will feature art in the mediums of clay, glass and fiber. That Saturday is also host to the Bloomington Handmade Market, which features some contemporary arts and crafts for sale.

The annual Canopy of Lights celebration on November 29th sets the festive atmosphere as Santa helps turn on the 27 miles of twinkle lights that make the downtown square glow. Enjoy the nostalgic feeling of community and cheer as the city is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with carol singing and hot chocolate. Then walk the streets and join local businesses, galleries and restaurants as they host open houses in celebrating the holiday season.

Shoppers will also enjoy the December 6th Gallery Walk. Stroll through downtown Bloomington's local art galleries, which are all conveniently located within walking distance. Art genres range from sophisticated to funky and art appreciators are guaranteed to find something they love.

There are plenty of opportunities to feel festive with these family-friendly holiday productions. On December 6th through the 8th, the renowned IU Jacobs School of Music will present the classic Nutcracker ballet. Later that month, Cardinal Stage Company will present Willy Wonka at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington. That show will run December 20th through January 4th, so families can enjoy New Year's Eve in Bloomington as well!

In addition to these major events there are numerous other shows, concerts and festivities. While you are here indulge in Bloomington's extensive local dining options and find the perfect holiday gift at one of many local boutiques. More information is available at
