10 Sure Bets in Btown for August, 2015

Categories: Arts & Culture, Live Music, Festivals

If you ask me, there isn't a consensus in this world about when summer really ends. Even though backpacks already line the store shelves and the little ones are going back to school in early August, there are still many of us who will cling to those final unbearably hot days in August like The Long Night is approaching (I haven't even read Game of Thrones, but my wife has the audiobook and won't stop talking about it).

So getting off my soapbox, here are ten summery events in August that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for anything, even advanced calculus.

Seussical the Musical

Seussical the Musical - July 31-August 16

IU Theatre students and professional actors bring you the beloved show Seussical the Musical, by TONY winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. See your favorite characters, like Horton the Elephant and The Cat in the Hat, come alive onstage.

King's Blues, BBQ & FunkFest

King's Blues, BBQ & FunkFest - August 1

Gallery Walk

Gallery Walk & First Friday - August 7

Each month Downtown Bloomington hosts First Friday, when downtown vendors welcome visitors by offering special savings and exciting events. This month, it coincides with Gallery Walk, when downtown art galleries open their doors for special exhibits.

A Fair of the Arts

A Fair of the Arts - August 8

Every second Saturday of the month, the popular Bloomington Community Farmers' Market is made even better by A Fair of the Arts. Bloomington Parks & Rec hosts a celebration of art and community with displays, sales, and demonstrations of visual arts and crafts by local and regional artists.

Learn to dance the Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie and other styles before the festival begins, then follow the pianists to several downtown venues for after-hours shows.

Middle Coast Film Festival

Middle Coast Film Festival - August 14-15

This is Bloomington's first interactive film festival. Enjoy multi-day screenings of highly anticipated international and national short and feature films, web-based episodes, and music videos at four Bloomington venues. Come for the movies, but don't forget about the panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking events at locations throughout this up-and-coming film destination.

2015 Sundance

Sundance Short Film Program - August 20

The celebrated IU Cinema showcases a wide variety of story and style, the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour is a program of six short films that won awards at this year's festival, which over the course of its more than 30-year history has been widely considered the premier showcase for short films

Wonderlab bso

Bees. Birds. Bach. - August 22

Bloomington Symphony Orchestra comes to WonderLab to present a variety of delightful short musical arrangements inspired by nature. A mini pre-concert will take place outside in the WonderGarden. Special hands-on musical activities in the Lab rooms upstairs extend the fun.

Natasha Leggero - August 27-29

You might have seen her on Comedy Central's epic Roast of Justin Bieber, or her brand new TV show Another Period which debuted on Comedy Central in June. But even if you haven't heard of Natasha Leggero (until now), you will fall in love with her wit at the nationally recognized Comedy Attic.
