11 Fab Events in Bloomington for October, 2015

Categories: General

Now it's officially fall, so we can officially get excited about apple cider and pumpkin candles. It's also time to dig out your favorite sweaters (if you need a new one that will last you for ages, check out J.L. Waters on the square) and try the new fall menus at local restaurants (I'm excited to try Rainbow Bakery's vegan fall donut flavors).

October in Bloomington means narrowing down your social calendar to only those 50 most exciting events. To help you, here are 10 of the top events in Bloomington, but you'll find many many more on our events calendar. While you're at it, check out these free things to do this fall.

John Waters

John Waters at the IU Cinema - October 1-2

The cinema that everyone's talking about will host acclaimed filmmaker John Waters for film screenings and a lecture. Get your tickets soon, because these events will be hugely popular. The lecture is free but ticketed, and the films are Cry-Baby, Cecil B. DeMented, and Pink Flamingos.

Fall Ballet: Classical Europa

IU Fall Ballet - October 2-3

The talented ballet students of Indiana University will perform dances by three iconic choreographers: Paul Taylor, George Balanchine, and Indiana-born Twyla Tharp (who will bring her dance troupe to the IU Auditorium on October 28).

Clayton Anderson

Clayton Anderson - October 2-3

This rising country music star comes to the Bluebird for two nights in a row, appearing with Rough Draft on Friday and Sheila Stephen on Saturday. Anderson has opeend for some of country music's biggest stars, including Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Kenney Chesney, and Jimmy Buffett.

IU Football

Hoosiers Football vs. Ohio State - October 3

Our Indiana Hoosiers football team will be making their Big 10 debut facing off against Ohio State. Head to the Rock to cheer on the Hoosiers, and take part in all the festivities pre-game, like tailgating in Hoosier Village. Go IU!

HIlly Hundred

Hilly Hundred Bicycle Tour - October 9-11

Now in its 48th year, the Hilly Hundred is a classic bicycling event designed for touring cyclists. If you like a bicycling challenge that includes entertainment and fellowship with more than 5,000 cyclists from over 40 states and several foreign countries, the Hilly is for you. This three day event (with two days of riding approximately 50 miles each day) is held in the scenic hills of southern Indiana.

Glass Pumpkins

Great Glass Pumpkin Patch - October 10

Visitors are invited to pick out their very own handmade blown glass pumpkin at the sixth annual Great Glass Pumpkin Patch. Walk among more than 600 artistic glass pumpkins for display and sale spread out on the picturesque Monroe County Courthouse lawn, just like a real pumpkin patch. All of the pumpkins are made by the members of the Bloomington Creative Glass Center.

Black Violin

Black Violin - October 17

Classically trained violinists Wil Baptiste and Kevin Sylvester have set a new standard by melding classical, hip-hop, rock, and pop musics into a single genre-busting act. They've performed for American troops in Iraq, at the President's Inaugural Ball, at the New Vistory Theater on Broadway, and beyond. Now they're coming to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

IU Soccer

IU Men's Soccer vs. Louisville - October 20

No. 18 Indiana University Men's Soccer will go up against no. 23 University of Louisville. Show your Hoosier pride and help cheer them on to victory.

Willie Nelson Merle Haggard

Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard - October 21

The iconic Texan Willie Nelson returns to the IU Auditorium with special guest Merle Haggard. Nelson's six-decade career has earned him seven Grammys spanning more than 200 albums, with hit songs like Crazy, On the Road Again, Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain, Hello Walls, and Stardust. The pair will revisit some of their chart-topping duets and songs from their latest collaborative album, Django and Jimmie, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.

Mr Burns

Mr. Burns, a post-electric play - October 23-31

When it opened in New York in 2013, the New York Times raved, "... downright brilliant... [this play] has arrived to leave you dizzy with the scope and dazzle of its ideas." Now Indiana University Theatre will bring playwright Anne Washburn's startling dystopian landscape to life. In a fallen American future, a band of survivors retell Simpson's episodes in an attempt to conjure a shared, comforting past. But as the years pass, these tales take on the symbolic power of religion.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror Picture Show - October 31

Cardinal Stage Company Presents: Spiced with sweet transvestites, mad scientists, and a big chunk of Meat Loaf, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult phenomenon unlike any film or musical you've ever seen. The party begins with a "de-virginization ritual" a half hour before each screening (trust us - it doesn't hurt). This initiation ceremony is fun for newbies and veterans alike.

See many more Halloween events.
