Summer is my favorite time in Bloomington . . .

Categories: Indiana University

This is my first ever venture into the blog world, so I thought I would post about things that make summer on campus a great time.  Laid back, is the first thing that comes to mind as I walk through campus for various meetings throughout my work week.  I spent many summers as a student and now as an alum in Bloomington.  I was one of the lucky ones, to find a job in B-town after graduation.  Not only do I get to live here, but I have to admit, my job at the Convention & Visitors Bureau is to promote Bloomington/Monroe County,  it doesn't get much better than that.

Things slow down a bit when over half of the student population leaves for three months, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do.

It wouldn't be summer without the Fun Frolic featuring rides, games, and carnival food.  It is held at Memorial Stadium parking lot and benefits IU Campus Child Care and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

If music is more your thing there is so much to mention at IU that I couldn't possibly talk about all the performances, but the next big event is the IU Summer Music Festival being held at various venues throughout campus.  Some events are for free and some admission is charged.

As I end my first post, I want to share good news for the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center which received a gift of $650,000 from what seemed an unlikely local resident.  This is the first donation of this size given to the center.  Exciting news for an entity that has recently had funding cuts and a terrific opportunity. Others will benefit as well, as kids from the Boys and Girls Club will be able to spend their summer learning at the gardening camp held there.

Like I said summer is my favorite time in Bloomington . . . . . at least until the IU football season begins.
