The Holiday Season in B-town

Categories: Arts & Culture

Wow – we've just gotten the Thansksgiving weekend behind us, complete with the B-town traditions of the Canopy of Lights Celebration and Holiday Market, so the holiday season is well underway here in Bloomington! Downtown has been transformed into sparkling winter wonderland with over 144,000 twinkling lights, decorations are going up all over town and there are lots of great holiday themed events and performances on the calendar!

Canopy of LightsAll those things together make it the perfect time to head for a wintery Bloomington getaway – take in a performance, get into the holiday spirit, then knock off some of those names on your holiday gift list with a trip to B-town's many unique shops and boutiques.

Here are a few of my favorite holiday events to get your planning started…

December GalleryWalk is coming up on Friday, Dec. 3rd. Several downtown galleries have special holiday themed exhibitions and gift ideas during the month of December – this is your chance to combine a great event with shopping for that finicky art lover on your list!

The NutcrackerThe IU Ballet presents their annual production of The Nutcracker, Dec. 3-5. This is a wonderful holiday tradition, highlighted by the special Nutcracker Tea – an opportunity for kids of all ages to meet with the characters following matinee performances.

WonderLab presents Reindeer Reserve on Dec. 4. Meet a real live reindeer, and other arctic animals, during this live arctic animal presentation from Silly Safaris.

Also on Dec. 4, the Wylie House Museum presents Wylie House by Candlelight, their annual holiday open house where you can enjoy music and light refreshments while you interact with hostesses in period attire.

The IU Auditorium presents the annual Chimes of Christmas on Dec. 8. This IU Tradition has been entertaining visitors and locals since the late 1950, featuring performances from the IU Jacobs School of Music, the Singing Hoosiers and an appearance from old St. Nick himself!

These are just a few of the events coming up in Bloomington. Check out our calendar of events for even more holiday events, including concerts, bazaars and craft fairs. Oh, and don't forget to take in the beautiful holiday decorations at the Fountain Square Mall – it's a great place to get a few holiday snapshots or have your picture taken with Santa!
