The Vid, only better

Categories: Arts & Culture

Another installment from our guest blogger, Julie Warren:

For long-time fans of the Bloomington bar scene, the Video Saloon (the Vid for short) is a staple.  It has been around for almost 30 years and seems to have been a favorite of the locals since the beginning.  But if you haven't been in a while, you might be in for a surprise- it's been remodeled!  I discovered this just last weekend while having a drink with friends.  No more crusty, busted booths.  No more filmy walls with peeling paint.  Oh no, it's not a dingy old watering hole any more; it's a clean and attractive bar.  Now I know what you're thinking: "The Vid has lost its character!"  That's the best part though- it hasn't.  There are still affable, no-nonsense bartenders, great beers on tap and plenty of pool tables and dart boards.  And the crowd is no less… diverse. There are plenty of townies (both lifelong and transplants), hip college students, hippies, Goths, g-monies and I even saw a greaser there.  The only thing that you won't find is a surplus of wound-up, dolled-up, prowling students, which is exactly how I like it.  It's still laid back, there's just a little nicer décor.

Even more exciting (in my opinion), was the addition of the lower level bar.  This new space has an area for bands too!  There was a local blues band (Left Foot Down) playing last Friday night, and the sound was perfect.  There's even a small area for those of us who absolutely must dance when live music is playing.  And it's right in front of the windows facing Walnut St, so everyone can see you make a fool of yourself.  I've been told I look like Elaine from Seinfeld when I dance.  Not a good thing.

Aside from the placement of the dance floor, the renovations are amazing.  I wasn't sure it was possible, but they've actually improved the Vid.  I'm looking forward to my next night out, which will most definitely include a stop at this historically hip bar.
