Contradance

EVERY WEDNESDAY, no exceptions!

Plus several special dances throughout the year.

All dances feature live music (Old Time, New England, and Irish dance tunes). Callers lead mostly contradances, with a few squares & mixers. The caller teaches each dance, then calls prompts during the dance (so no need to memorize steps). Beginners are welcome and there's no need to come with a partner. (We change partners each dance.)

When: Free beginner lessons: 7:30 pm
First dance: 8:00 pm
Waltz after the last dance: 10:15 pm

Where: Harmony School Gym (909 E. 2nd St.).
The gym is on the west end of the school. Enter from the parking lot which can be accessed from Hunter Street, a block south of Atwater St., just east of Woodlawn St.

In July & August weekly dances are usually at the air-conditioned Boys and Girls Club, 311 S. Lincoln (just south of Third St.).

What is Contradancing? It's not country line dancing! You and your partner dance a series figures with another couple, as instructed by the caller, and then progress to the next couple and dance the same series of figures with them until you've danced will all the couples in the line. Many of the figures are like those used for square dancing. This type of dance is a continuously evolving tradition going back to Renaissance Europe and has an enthusiastic following around the world. BOTMDG is one of the oldest groups of its kind in the US, and has danced EVERY Wednesday since the group started in 1972. It's very energetic dancing, so dress accordingly.
