As working artists ourselves, we understand that what you don't want to hear is yet another cancellation. It is a decision which we have debated since the COVID 19 lockdown began. At that time September seemed so far in the future we were sure we would be going forward. Now we have made the dreaded decision to cancel the 2020 Fourth Street Arts and Crafts Festival, Bloomington, Indiana.
We realize the show could go on with all the social distancing rules of masks and buckets of hand sanitizer. Our concern is, of course, for our community's safety. But the thing that has kept us up at night is our love for our artists. We do not see how it is possible to offer each of you the fair opportunity for a financial success. I keep thinking of "art fair " dynamics....the crowd of old friends who run into each other in front of your booth. They are all catching up while you are wondering how rude you would be to ask them to move along. The couple trying to decide on a big piece and so go have a cold libation to contemplate their finances. The kids doing projects at the children's tent, our fantastic local music that makes you sway to the rhythms, the poet's jam at the spoken word tent...none of these would likely happen with the "new rules". It would not be an art fair as we know them. These things may all come to be in the future. We are not willing to experiment with you, our artists.
So we move forward, offering an on line venue for our accepted artists to promote your work. This will continue until the end of 2020. We will send a separate letter with these details. We encourage you to participate. There is no fee. The Art Council of Bloomington has pledged to help us get the word out. We can each do our part to promote ourselves and each other.
Our director, Vicki Munn, is available for you. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We wish for you and yours safety and good health. We look forward to the future and hope to see you all in 2021.
