Monroe Lake’s most popular special event, Ghostly Gathering, returns to Paynetown SRA this year on October 25-26.
On Friday, you can drop by to craft your own “pet ghost” from 4 to 6 p.m. ($2 craft fee), while supplies last. At 7:45 p.m., the naturalist invites you to gather around the campfire for spooky folk legends and real-life tales of murder and mischief in the Salt Creek Valley, accompanied by cider and popcorn.
Activities resume on Saturday afternoon, with creepy, crawly crafts from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by the costume contest at 4 p.m. Awards will be presented in 6 different age categories, including adults, plus special categories for costumed canines and group costumes (2 or more people).
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, campers in the A-loop will host trick-or-treating. This is also the judging period for the Campsite Decorating Contest, with prizes for first place, second place, and staff choice.
Ghostly Gathering concludes on Saturday night with a Halloween Party from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the Activity Center. This year’s theme is “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” There will be activities, food, and games for all ages.
All activities are open to both campers and day visitors. Activity details are on the DNR calendar at bitly.com/monroelakeprograms. For camping reservations, see camp.IN.gov.
