About the Director

Christopher Raphael is a professor in the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing, where he serves as chair of the Computer Science Division and heads the Music Informatics program. He holds adjunct appointments in Cognitive Science, Statistics, and the Jacobs School of Music. He studied the oboe with Ray Still, was a fellow at Tanglewood, and won the San Francisco Symphony young artist competition. Following a brief musical career, he received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. Since then, he worked in a wide array of applications, including radiation therapy treatment planning, character recognition, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, before coming back to music as his primary research focus. His active research interests include optical music recognition, synthesis of musical expression, and musical accompaniment systems, all areas for which he has been supported by the National Science Foundation. The Informatics Philharmonic is an example of this work.
