Rated by a Sight and Sound poll of more than 200 filmmakers and critics as the greatest documentary of all time, Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera is increasingly well-known and yet inexhaustible in its ability to fascinate. Vertov’s masterpiece is celebrated for its reflexive consideration of film method, form, distribution, and exhibition. It celebrates nonfiction film itself, layering beautiful Constructivist cinematography, complex and innovative editing, and an array of narrative strands as it tells the story of the force of life in the new Soviet Union, with women leading the way.
