Two live performances of The Second Shepherds’ Play, a late-medieval comedic biblical play devoted to the story of the angelic announcement of Jesus’s birth to lowly shepherds.

Offering a humorous account of the shepherds’ encounter with a notorious thief who steals one of their sheep and tries to pass it off as a newborn baby, this often-taught but little-performed play is full of comedy, song, and charming revelations.

Performances feature a new translation of the play by IU’s Rosemarie McGerr (Comparative Literature) and are directed by Katherine McGerr (Assistant Professor of Acting, Syracuse). They also feature many IU undergraduate students and sheep puppetry!

A related symposium, From Page to Stage: Medieval Drama and Modern Theater, will also be held from December 6-7. For more information, see the events feed at medieval.indiana.edu.

Tickets are free but should be reserved in advance at: https://2shepiu.ticketleap.com/2shepiu/
