Singin' in the Rain

A silent movie star’s career is threatened when talkies come into fashion. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) may be able to save his latest project by converting it into a musical but what will he do about Lina (Jean Hagen), his on-screen romantic partner with a terrible voice? Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) can save the film, falling in love with Don in the process, but Lina is determined to stop her.

Singin' in the Rain was only a modest hit when first released, although Donald O'Connor won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Jean Hagen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Betty Comden and Adolph Green won the Writers Guild of America Award for their screenplay. Singin’ in the Rain has since been accorded legendary status by contemporary critics, and is frequently regarded as the best movie musical ever made. It tops the AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals list and is ranked as their fifth-greatest American motion picture of all time.
