Series: IU Cinema 101: Get to Know Your Place for Film, IU Cinema Virtual Screening Room
Since 2016, IU Cinema’s A Place for Film blog has presented quality, relevant, interesting, and sometimes provocative writing about programs related to IU Cinema. Every month, A Place for Film brings its readers a selection of films from its group of regular bloggers. Although these films are not among those currently being screened at IU Cinema, this series reflects the varied programming to be found at the Cinema, as well as demonstrates the eclectic tastes of the bloggers. Each contributor picks one film each month they couldn’t wait to share with others.
David Carter is a co-founder of Cicada Cinema, contributor to the IU Cinema blog, and co-host and producer of A Place for Film: The IU Cinema Podcast. His love of film ranges from Speed Racer to The Holy Mountain to Do the Right Thing to everything far away and in between.
Laura Ivins loves stop motion, home movies, imperfect films, nature hikes, and Stephen Crane's poetry. She has a PhD from Indiana University and an MFA from Boston University. In addition to watching and writing about movies, sometimes she also makes them. Ivins is a former IU Cinema projectionist and Underground Film Series programmer.
Jack Miller enjoys the films of Howard Hawks, Jacques Tourneur, and John Ford. He graduated from Indiana University with a BA in English, and currently resides in Chicago. He also enjoys listening to country and disco music.
Michaela Owens is thrilled to be the editor of A Place for Film, in addition to being IU Cinema's Publications Editor. An IU graduate with a BA in Communication and Culture and an MA in Cinema and Media Studies, she never stops thinking about classic Hollywood, thanks to her mother’s introduction to it, and likes to believe she is an expert on Katharine Hepburn and Esther Williams.
Jesse Pasternack is a graduate of Indiana University. During his time at IU, Jesse was the co-president of the Indiana Student Cinema Guild. He also wrote about film, television, and pop culture for the Indiana Daily Student. Jesse has been a moderator at Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival and is a friend of the Doug Loves Movies podcast. An aspiring professional writer-director, his own film work has appeared at Campus Movie Fest and the Anthology Film Archives in New York City.
