The Grunwald Gallery of Art will present The Deep End: Golden Age Comic Books, an exhibit and symposium organized by Malcolm Mobutu Smith and the Grunwald Gallery. This collection of comic books amassed by Smith over the last 30 years focuses on known examples of over 400 covers that depict underwater imagery. This group comes from Smith’s otherwise large and comprehensive collection of comic books and related material of close to 20,000 items. These comics are both an interest and compulsion for Smith, the collector, and Smith the artist and maker, inspiring visual explorations for his creative practice.

A gallery talk by Malcolm Mobutu Smith will take place at 12 noon on Friday, January 13, with a panel discussion following at 5pm. Participants in the panel discussion include IU faculty Malcolm Mobutu Smith and Andre Molotiu; artist Raphael Cornford, designer Sarah Edmands Martin and IU PhD student Jesse Matlock. A reception will follow from 6-8pm.
