Bloomington to host 2010 NIRCA
Cross Country National Championship Meet

The prestigious event is expected to bring up to 800 runners to the Bloomington area.

Bloomington – The National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) recently announced the site for the 2010 NIRCA Cross Country National Championship. Bloomington, Indiana was chosen from a pool of several cities across the country to host this prestigious running event, to be held on November 13, 2010.

The Hoosier Sports Corp, the sports marketing arm of the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Indiana University Athletics and the IU Run Club collaborated in submitting a bid to host the event. NIRCA officials cited Bloomington’s central location, just one hour south of Indianapolis, and ease of accessibility by plane and automobile as reasons why the central Indiana city was chosen to host this year’s national meet. Also cited, was the presence of the Indiana University Run Club in Bloomington, with thirteen additional clubs located within a five-hour drive.

The 2010 Championship Meet will be held on the Indiana University Cross Country Course, which has also hosted four NCAA Cross Country Championships and five Big Ten Conference Championship meets. The site is ideal for handling large numbers of race participants and has been praised as a very spectator-friendly course. Runners will have the opportunity to experience the challenging 6k (women) and 8K (men) courses that feature rolling hills, smooth curves and short straights.

This event is expected to bring around 800 participants to the Bloomington area for the weekend, along with coaches, fans, family and friends. The Hoosier Sports Corp (HSC) estimates that the event will result in a total of $168,428 in economic impact to the Bloomington area.

The NIRCA Cross Country National Championship Meet will include an Open/Alumni 5k race that is open to the public, as well as opportunities to support the event and runners as race day and weekend volunteers. Individuals interested in volunteering should contact NIRCA Race Management by e-mail at race.management@clubrunning.org. More details about the event can be found online at www.clubrunning.org.
