Bloomington hosts 2008 AAU Girls’ Basketball

Super Regional Tournament this Weekend

Over 35 teams in six age divisions will play 75 games over the course of two days.

Bloomington, Ind. – It’s March Madness time and though Bloomington is widely known as the home of Indiana University men’s basketball, this weekend the girls are coming to town! The Hoosier Amateur Sports Corporation, a Division of the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention and Visitors Bureau, is bringing the 2008 AAU Girls’ Super Regional Tournament to Bloomington, March 8-9. The event is one of a limited number of AAU National Tournament qualifier events around the country.

More than 35 teams, comprised of up to 12 girls per team, will participate in the two-day tournament held at the Bloomington SportsPlex. The teams will be divided into five age divisions, ranging from age 9 and under to age 15 and under, and will play in more than 75 games over the course of the event.  The winner in each age group will receive the right to participate in the 2008 AAU Girls’ Basketball National Tournament.

Participating teams are traveling from a number of surrounding states, with the farthest traveling team coming from Missouri. More than 23 teams from around the state will be playing with five of those from right here in Bloomington!

Spectators are welcome to attend the tournament and cheer on your hometown teams.  Admission for the tournament is $6 for a single day or $10 for a tournament pass.  Children age 6 and under are admitted free. Action will begin on Saturday at 8 am and continue into the evening. Games will continue on Sunday beginning at 8:00 am, with the age division finals beginning at 2:30 pm. Results of the tournament will be posted online at www.visitbloomington.com/aau on Monday, March 10.

Economic Impact

This is the fifth year that Bloomington has hosted an AAU SuperRegional event and once again the tournament will bring a number of out of town visitors to Bloomington, including players, coaches and family members. Participants should be visible around town and local hotels, restaurants and other attractions may see in increase in visitors during the weekend event. The tournament is estimated to bring $320,000 in economic impact to the Bloomington area.
