Track to Join Half Marathon at 2012

Categories: HSC News

Bloomington, IN-November 14, 2011-NIRCA is partnering with the Indiana University Athletics
Department and Hoosier Sports Corp to host the first NIRCA Track National Championships.
This event will combine with the IU Mini Marathon's partnership with the NIRCA Half Marathon
National Championships to offer NIRCA member clubs a weekend of Track and Road National

Last year, NIRCA hosted its first Spring Nationals by partnering with the IU Mini Marathon in
Bloomington, Indiana to produce the NIRCA Half Marathon National Championship. The
success of the event led to a renewed partnership for this year's event on March 31, 2012.
The decision to host a Track Nationals came from the success and growth of last year's Spring
Nationals and this year's recently concluded Fall Championships Series which saw an
expansion of Regional Championships in Cross Country from four to nine and a growth of
member clubs by almost fifty percent.

Executive Director Ben Bartley explains, "NIRCA member clubs have called for a Track
Championships for the last few years and at the time it just wasn't feasible given the financial
commitment and liability of track. Our partnership with Indiana University and Hoosier Sports
Corp have helped us make this a possibility. In the past, the time commitment from the NIRCA
leadership team was also a limiting factor, as NIRCA is a volunteer organization and has grown
rapidly in its first five years. Ultimately, managing a new event that would meet our quality
standards could have negatively impacted the well-established cross country events. However,
this Fall, we have been able to expand the volunteer group by adding some valuable leaders
within the NIRCA community that we believe will help relieve us of this strain. We are very
excited to finally be able to give our clubs what they have been calling for."
The 2012 Spring National Championships weekend will open on Saturday morning, March 31
with the second annual NIRCA Half Marathon National Championships, coinciding with
Bloomington's IU Mini Marathon. That afternoon and evening, preliminary rounds will begin in
the NIRCA Track National Championships. Sunday, April 1 will conclude the weekend with the
finals in the track events.

Contested events in track are subject to change, but currently will include the 800m, 1500m,
3000m Steeplechase, and 5000m for individuals and 4x400m, 4x800m, and Distance Medley for
team relays. Eligibility will be open to all runners of NIRCA member clubs that are recognized by
their educational institution as full-time students.

More discussion and final details on the 2012 Spring Nationals Championships will be
available at the 2012 NIRCA Winter Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on January 13-15.
The National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) is a governing body and central
point of communication or the college running community. The grassroots organization promotes
networking and friendly competition among collegiate running, cross country, and track clubs.
NIRCA coordinates many events, including a fall cross country season, XC Championship
Series, Road and Track Nationals, and all-club conferences. NIRCA is more than just running.
