Bloomington, IN - Visit Bloomington is excited to celebrate the local travel and tourism industry with the annual Tourism Week, May 18-22, 2015. This year's celebration will feature activities and programs that highlight the importance of tourism to the local economy and help local residents become more aware of what the community has to offer.
Tourism is a major industry in Monroe County, supporting 4,163 jobs and contributing $97 million in wages and $45 million to the county tax base annually (from a 2013 study). There were approximately 1.84 million visitors to the county in 2013, generating total gross sales of $326 million. Tourism Week honors all the tourism professionals who help make Bloomington a great visitor destination.
One highlight of Tourism Week is the Bloomington Tourism Awards presentation honoring winners who have been chosen by the public, to be announced at a luncheon for the winners on May 21. Winners will also be announced in the Herald-Times on Sunday, May 24.
In addition to several special events for industry colleagues, public programs for the week include:
Monday, May 18 - Visitors Center Open House
Stop by the Bloomington Visitors Center at 2285 N. Walnut St. for food samples, giveaways, discounts and food trucks! Visit Bloomington staff will be on site to chat about tourism and other questions you might have about Bloomington. The Open House takes place from 10:30am - 2:30pm.
Friday, May 22 - Pizza & Ice Cream Social on the courthouse lawn
Locals and visitors get to hear the story of tourism face-to-face when Visit Bloomington takes over the courthouse lawn! The event includes free pizza samples from Pizza X and Bucceto's, and ice cream from Hartzell's, plus live music and games, and takes place from 11:30am - 1:30pm.
