Bloomington for Tastemakers

CRAFT DISTILLERY TAPS INTO ROOFTOP HIVE

Bees are just one of the secret ingredients at craft distillery Cardinal Spirits, known for its sunny porch on the B-Line Trail and its massive continuous still. Co-founder Adam Quirk and his team now harvest honey from their own rooftop bee hive to make their signature Honey Vanilla Vodka.

SECRETLY CANADIAN CELEBRATES TWO DECADES

This September, Bloomington’s Secretly Label Group—whose family of record labels consists of Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguar, Dead Oceans and Numero Group—celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since its founding, the label has grown its roster to include such large names as Bon Iver and Tig Notaro.

FOR LOVE AND SAWDUST

From their warehouse workshop, partners Audi Culver and Ivy Siosi craft high-end, made-to-order furniture as well as hand-shaved longbows, axes and necklaces for their Siosi brand. Their workshop is home to Arrow, a long-haired Dachsund, and when they’re not woodworking, the pair spends their time riding dirt bikes near Monroe Lake.

DEMAND FOR SOUGHT-AFTER UPLAND SOURS DRIVES EXPANSION

Getting a case of Upland Brewing’s sours is no small feat. The sours, which made the Huffington Post’s list of the most sought-after craft beers in America, are so popular that the brewery often sells them by lottery. They are even opening a sours-only location in Bloomington soon.

SIP, WORK, SHOP AT HOPSCOTCH COFFEE

This B-Line Trail favorite proudly models small business collaboration. Customers sit in chairs built by local furniture maker Vincent Edwards while enjoying baked goods from the nearby Rainbow Bakery, homemade syrups from retro Bea’s Soda Bar and coffee liqueur from Cardinal Spirits.

ASIAN RESTAURANTS PACK A WORLD OF FLAVOR

There’s no shortage of Eastern cuisine in Bloomington. The town of just over 80,000 boasts an impressive 40+ Asian restaurants, and they offer a whole lot more than sesame chicken and fortune cookies (although Americanized dishes are readily available). From authentic Thai curry to traditional Tibetan dishes, B-Town’s slate of Asian restaurants provides a true cultural experience for your taste buds.
