The Hickory Ridge Horsecamp is designed for horse camping, however, any National Forest visitor is welcome to camp at no cost. It is a primitive campground but accessible vault toilets, hitching racks, and water for livestock is provided. Day use parking is also provided.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: All campsites will be by RESERVATION ONLY from March 29 through April 10 due to the 2024 Eclipse.  Camping will still be free but there will be a service fee to make your reservation on www.recreation.gov.  Check our Eclipse page for updates.

Permit Info: Horses and mountain bike riders (age 17 years and older) are required to have a permit and stay on trails designated for that type of use. Permits are available from our offices and local vendors.
Open Season: Year-round
Usage: Light
Restrictions: Campground has 10 designated sites.  Camp patrons must use a designated site.  Day users must use the designated day use parking area. Firewood Restrictions 
  • Any firewood brought onto National Forest System land must meet ONE of the firewood requirements on Hoosier National Forest.
  • Use of on-site firewood must only be from dead, downed material. Standing trees, living or dead, may not be cut or defaced.

Water: Water is available for livestock but not tested as safe for human consumption.

General Information

Directions: From Highway 446 (going south on 446 turn left, going north on 446 turn right) onto Hwy 58 East, proceed 6.5 miles to Norman, IN to only stop sign in town, turn left at brown FS sign. Proceed another 0.3 miles and turn left onto road 1250 W at brown FS sign and proceed another 1.5 miles to Hickory Grove Road and turn right at brown FS sign and proceed another 0.7 miles to Hickory Ridge Trailhead on left side of road. Activities

Campground Camping

The Hickory Ridge Horsecamp is designed for horse camping, however, any National Forest visitor is welcome to camp at no cost. It is a primitive campground with accessible vault toilets, hitching racks, and provides water for livestock (no potable water  provided). Day use parking is also provided.

This horsecamp is also a trailhead for much of the 46 mile Hickory Ridge Trail.
