National Tourism & Travel Week, May 2-8

Thank you to all of our residents, visitors, and business owners who make Bloomington such a vibrant & friendly visitor destination. Without you, our local shops, restaurants, venues, and accommodations wouldn't be able to flourish as they do thanks to your interest in touring B-Town. Please read the statement below from Visit Bloomington's Executive Director, Mike McAfee, about your impact on tourism in Monroe County and how we can foster an even stronger community going forward.

To our community:

The past year has been an unprecedented challenge for all of us. The pandemic has impacted our community in ways we never could have imagined, but in the face of uncertainty, you came together to keep our cherished local businesses and hospitality industry alive. You placed carry out orders from local restaurants, got outside to support our parks, escaped the house for a safe staycation, embraced outdoor dining across the seasons, purchased gift cards from small businesses, and masked up to protect the workers on the frontlines of it all. Area businesses have stayed afloat during this time of crisis thanks to your unyielding support.

As the community slowly and safely reopens, we can expect the return of events, meetings, and visitors in Monroe County. The return of these things means more traffic in town, more guests in hotels, more shoppers in stores, and more diners in restaurants, all of which will have a much-needed positive economic impact on our local businesses and hospitality industry.

With the increase in travel in the coming months, we ask you to please practice patience with our hospitality businesses and kindly welcome visitors back to Bloomington. While you've helped local restaurants and shops survive, they have been operating with very low staff numbers and are just now beginning to hire and train new employees. These businesses will need and very much appreciate your kindness and patience as they do their best to return to normal operating levels — your continued support is integral to their success.

We're still all in this together, just as we have been over the course of the past year. Our spirit of togetherness and shared love for our community is what makes Bloomington such a special place. Thank you for your dedication to our Hoosier home during a time that has tested us all, and thank you for your continued support as we rebuild Monroe County into the best version of itself to-date.

Sincerely,

Mike McAfee
