Just seven miles west of Bloomington is the historic town of Ellettsville, Indiana. Founded in 1837, Ellettsville is steeped in limestone history. "Millions of tons of building stone have been shipped by trains and trucks throughout the United States to build magnificent memorials, cathedrals, government buildings, libraries, public schools, colleges and universities, and countless churches and synagogues. Included in these shipments have been priceless carvings that have told the rich history of our states and our Nation's capital. Craftsmen from our limestone mills have traveled throughout the nation to do on-site work on these structures in building American history." - Maurice Endwright (Ellettsville Journalist)
In honor of Limestone Month, we wanted to share a little bit more about this historic town and how you can make a day of it in Ellettsville.
The Caffeinated Cook
Get your day started in historic downtown Ellettsville at The Caffeinated Cook. Breakfast is served until close, but they have a great lunch selection of sandwiches, soups and salads as well. There is also a wide variety of pastry options from cookies, muffins and scones, which go fast depending on the flavor! If it is a sunny out, grab a seat outdoors.
Indiana Limestone Heritage Trail
Take the rest of your coffee to go and learn more about limestone while strolling the wooded Limestone Heritage Trail in downtown Ellettsville. This easy half-mile trail features several artifacts and sculptures along the way. The trail will eventually connect with the Karst Farm Greenway providing a biking and walking trail that spans much of western Monroe County.
Urban Air Adventure Park
Burn off some energy at the indoor Urban Air Adventure Park, where kids (and kids at heart), can enjoy a multitude of activities to challenge their body and mind, but most importantly have family fun!
Stinesville
After breakfast, cruise down the road to Stinesville, Indiana. This sleepy town is said to be the starting point of the Indiana Limestone industry. The first quarry opened in 1827 and the first commercial quarry opened in 1855 with the arrival of the railroad. Check out the town's post office and general store, The Stinesville Mercantile, in operation since 1860. This historic landmark is home to lots of curiosities and Stinesville memorabilia and definitely worth a visit. It also happens to be on the Bicentennial Fish Scavenger Hunt.
