One of Bloomington’s most beloved traditions is the Monroe County Fair, which will take place this year from Monday, June 30, through Sunday, July 6, at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.
The Monroe County Fair has deep roots—it began in 1855 when the local agricultural society held the first event. These days, it’s a summertime staple, drawing crowds for the carnival, live music, and all the classic fair food. Think corn dogs, ribbon fries, pork rinds—favorites that regulars look forward to every year.
Here’s what to know before heading to the 2025 fair, plus a few tips for first-timers!

Monroe County Fair: 101
The Monroe County Fair schedule is packed with all sorts of fun to enjoy. There are six different sections of the fair: the Grandstand, the Family Stage, the Auditorium, the Kids' Big Top Tent, the West Lawn, and the North Lawn. Each one has a variety of must-see entertainment and incredible activities that keep locals and visitors alike coming back year after year.
Activities
The fair schedule includes several unique activities, including laser tag and the much-anticipated “Balloons over Bloomington” hot air balloon rides. Note: These are tethered balloon rides, offering the thrill of lift-off while remaining safely anchored to the ground—perfect for first-timers and families!
Of course, there’s also the carnival with thrilling rides and games. Plus, the fair puts on three exciting contests each year: the Cutest Baby contest, the Bake-Off, and the Queen and Princess Pageant!
Entertainment
The fair packs in plenty to see and hear—free concerts from acts like Dawn Keller and Jim Hayden and The Country Playboys, plus returning favorites like the Monster Truck rally, rodeo, demolition derby, tractor pull, go-kart races, and Supercross dirt bike and quad events. Bear Hollow Wood Carvers will be back too, chainsaws and all, turning logs into sculpture in real time. And watch for opening night fireworks—they usually launch the week with a bang.
4-H Showcase
A highlight of the fair each year, the 4-H program celebrates the talent and dedication of local students. Visitors can explore a wide range of projects—from livestock and horticulture to crafts, science, and technology. The barns and exhibit halls offer a behind-the-scenes look at the care, effort, and year-round commitment these young participants bring to their work.
Kid-Friendly Things to Do
While the fair is naturally kid-friendly, you’ll find several great activities specifically designed for little ones to enjoy like the Foam Zone, the pedal tractor pull, and the Silly Safari—a live animal conservation education show! Plus, plenty of rides and activities are designed specifically for the kids—think: petting zoos, face painting, magic shows, prizes, and more.
Admission to the Monroe County Fair
