Best Sunrise Spots in Bloomington 

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve 

Catch an early sunrise at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, located just minutes away from the Indiana University campus. Early birds will experience morning quiet on the preserve’s trails, plus soft foggy light and glowing reflections bouncing off the water. This is an ideal spot for photographers to capture the sunrise. Pro Tip: If you’re a kayaker, grab your kayak and experience the sunrise from the middle of the lake! 

Monroe Lake 

Monroe Lake is Bloomington’s largest lake, where you can catch every sliver of the sunrise from its western shores. This is another excellent option for those looking to experience a sunrise from the water, or by sitting on one of many fishing docks or scenic pull-offs. For a more relaxed beach setting, Paynetown State Recreation Area offers a sandy shoreline and wide-open views that make it an especially peaceful spot to start the day.

Hoosier National Forest
