Over four and a half centuries of ruthless, systematic trafficking of West Africans into Europe and the Americas—from the earliest abductions by Portuguese traders at the start of the 15th century until the abolition of slavery in the United States and across South America in the latter half of the 19th—the voices of countless musicians of African descent were heard in both enslaved communities and elite cultural circles.
